How does online Cognitive Analytic Therapy work?

CAT is often delivered in groups of 16 sessions.

  • Sessions 1-4 – talking therapy; exploring your current difficulties in conjunction with your developmental history. Your therapist creates a “reformulation letter” which you summarises a shared understanding of your life story, with some insight into how your past might be affecting your present.
  • Sessions 5-12: formulation diagram; you’ll use formulation tools and journals to help recognise your unhelpful behavioural patterns. Together with your therapist, you’ll develop strategies to overcome unhelpful patterns.
  • Sessions 13-16: talking therapy; an explicit focus on endings. You’ll create goodbye letters that you read aloud
