Q&A for Therapists and Coaches
Tell us a bit about yourself.
I’m originally from Ireland and have been based in Frankfurt, Germany, for the past 17 years. My core therapeutic approach is cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), which focuses on the interconnectedness of our thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. Through reshaping thought patterns and encouraging behavioural activation, we can meaningfully shift how we feel and function. I also draw from acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), incorporating mindfulness and metaphors to foster objectivity and creativity in navigating mental health challenges.
How long did your education and training take — and what did your path to this profession look like?
My journey began with a five-year degree in psychology from Dublin City University, followed by a diploma in CBT. I also trained as an online therapist with the Academy of Online Training, focusing specifically on the nuances of delivering therapy in a digital format. I’m a member of the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI) and the Association for Counselling and Online Therapy (ACTO).
Before entering the field of therapy, I worked in both music and preschool education. My curiosity about human nature and passion for deeper connection eventually led me to this profession. I also write a weekly advice online column for the Sunday business post https://www.businesspost.ie/ask-layla/ where I explore everyday psychological and emotional issues.
How would you describe your general approach when working with people?
I take a collaborative and client-centred approach, always tailoring my work to the unique needs and experiences of each person. My framework blends elements of CBT, ACT, person-centred therapy, and mindfulness-based stress reduction. I’m committed to continuous professional development, regularly attending webinars and conferences to stay informed and inspired.
Is there a moment with a client (anonymous, of course) that stayed with you?
There are many, but one that stands out involved a client who had been living with OCD. She found it very difficult to tune out of other stimuli and enjoy her own experience. She described one day while she was swimming that instead of allowing her thoughts to start spiralling, she just watched the bubbles as she swam. Moments like these can seem small, but they are the beginning of creating freedom for the client.
What do you do when you're stressed?
I just recently joined a choir which I love, singing is such a powerful stress relief!
What's one small habit that makes a big difference in your everyday life?
I practice Yoga daily, even if its only 5 minute in the morning, I find that creating a regular practice really helps to keep stress levels low.
What’s one piece of advice you’d give for a lighter, happier life?
Make time for the people you care about. The longest running Harvard study showed that it is the quality of our relationships that dictates our happiness.
What does being part of SupportRoom mean to you?
SupportRoom represents accessibility, flexibility, and innovation in mental health care. I appreciate how digital platforms like this can bridge gaps — whether geographic, logistical, or emotional — and provide consistent support to those who need it.
And now, just for fun:
– Do people assume you can read their minds?
Yes — and I gently remind them I can’t! I find it important not to be in work mode when I am with friends or family.
– Do friends ask for advice even when you’re off the clock?
Sometimes, but I don’t believe I have all the answers and we all struggle with life’s problems.
– Have you ever argued with your partner… and later realised they were kind of right? 😄
Yes of course…..I like to remind myself of the saying “you can be right or you can be married!”
