Q&A for Therapists and Coaches
Tell us a bit about yourself.
I’m a clinical social worker based in South Africa, currently working in a child and youth care centre where I focus on child protection and ensuring that the best interests of children are always at the heart of what we do. Alongside that, I work as a therapist on this digital platform, supporting individuals from all walks of life. I’m passionate about people, and I find great meaning in walking alongside clients as they navigate their personal journeys.
How long did your education and training take — and what did your path to this profession look like?
I completed my Bachelor of Social Work (Honours) degree over four years at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. My path into social work was quite intentional—I’ve always been drawn to meaningful, people-centered work. Over the years, my experiences in residential care and therapeutic settings have deepened my understanding of trauma, resilience, and human connection. It’s a profession that continues to shape me as much as I shape it.
How would you describe your general approach when working with people?
I’d describe my approach as strength-based and person-centred. I believe every person’s experience is unique, and their life circumstances deserve to be understood in context. At the same time, I love helping clients discover and build on the strengths they already hold within. My sessions are grounded in empathy, respect, and collaboration—I’m here to walk with my clients, not ahead of them.
Is there a moment with a client (anonymous, of course) that stayed with you?
There are many moments that stay with me, but one that stands out is when a client who had faced significant grief told me, “You’ve helped me find light in a place I thought was permanently dark.” It reminded me of the power of simply being present, listening deeply, and holding space for someone’s pain without trying to “fix” it.
What do you do when you're stressed?
When life gets overwhelming, music and long walks are my therapy. There’s something grounding about being outside, moving my body, and letting my thoughts flow freely. On quieter days, I fully commit to a binge session of a gripping series or true crime documentary to escape into another world for a little while.
What's one small habit that makes a big difference in your everyday life?
Pausing—just taking a moment to breathe deeply before reacting or responding. It’s such a simple practice, but it helps me stay present and grounded, both personally and professionally.
What’s one piece of advice you’d give for a lighter, happier life?
Don’t underestimate your resilience. You’ve likely already survived things you once thought you couldn’t. Be kind to yourself and give yourself credit for the quiet ways you keep going.
What does being part of SupportRoom mean to you?
Being part of SupportRoom allows me to offer help in a way that’s accessible and flexible for clients. Digital support is powerful—it meets people where they are, whether that’s in the middle of a busy workday or from the comfort of home. I love being able to connect with clients who may not otherwise access traditional therapy.
And now, just for fun:
- Do people assume you can read their minds?
Absolutely! I’ve often been told I can “see beyond what’s being said,” which, to be fair, comes with the territory. - Do friends ask for advice even when you’re off the clock?
Always. Especially when it comes to anything child-related—they know it’s my area of expertise. - Have you ever argued with your partner… and later realised they were kind of right?
Yes… and I will very quietly admit it when I do! Growth, right?
