Have you experienced a traumatic event? Do you experience flashbacks or terrifying nightmares? These could be signs of PTSD.

What is PTSD?

Post-traumatic stress disorder (let’s call it PTSD) is an anxiety disorder triggered by a traumatic event like a terror attack or natural disaster, or historical violence, abuse, or neglect.

The condition often manifests as vivid nightmares or flashbacks that can occur at unpredictable times, often triggered by an event in the present that reminds you of your trauma.

PTSD usually occurs directly after the traumatic experience, but it can develop later in life, arising from an unaddressed childhood or young life traumatic experience.

Do I have PTSD?

Signs of PTSD commonly involve a range of symptoms, including:

  • Flashbacks, nightmares, repetitive images or sensations
  • Nausea, pain, stomach upset, trembling, sweating
  • Avoidance activities
  • Emotional numbness
  • Hyper-arousal: anger, irritability
  • Insomnia or sleeping problems
  • Lack of concentration

Many people living with PTSD also experience anxiety and depression and might engage in self-harm or substance abuse.
